Welcome to the Wonder Jewelers wedding ring guide, with a breakdown of everything you need to know in order to find the perfect symbol of your love.

What Does A Wedding Ring Symbolize?

A wedding ring is a symbol that's both private and public. It's a sign of love and fidelity between you and your partner, it also signifies to the rest of the world that you're in a committed relationship. Your beautiful wedding band is a celebration of the vows that you exchange on your wedding day, and your desire to be with your partner for eternity. While your engagement ring symbolizes the promise of marriage, it's the wedding ring that makes the marriage official.

Many of our customers wonder if a wedding ring should have diamonds. While we do offer many wedding ring styles that have diamonds set into the band, many of our most popular wedding rings for women and wedding ring for men are unadorned metal bands.

The difference between a Wedding Ring and a Wedding Band

A wedding ring (or wedding band) is what a couple exchanges during their wedding ceremony. The terms are used interchangeably and mean the same thing.

Wedding Rings For Women

The options for a women's wedding ring is everything from a very simple metal band to a much more elaborate style like a diamond eternity ring. A great way to start your search is by exploring Wonder Jewelers top styles for women where you can get an overview of our most popular designs, including classic platinum bands, platinum bands with micropavé diamonds, French pavé diamond eternity rings in yellow 18kt gold and 14k rose gold, and vintage-inspired styles with milgrain and fancy-shaped diamonds.

Combining Your Engagement Ring And Wedding Ring

The wedding ring is traditionally worn on the finger next to the pinky, on the left hand. This springs from the belief in ancient Greece that the ring finger was connected to the heart by a vein of love. On the day of their wedding ceremony, many women will temporarily move their engagement ring to their right hand. Once married with their wedding ring in place, they will move the engagement ring back to the left hand, leaving the wedding ring closest to the heart.

One of the most exciting developments that we've noticed over the last several years is that more and more couples come buy engagement rings together—and in many cases, think about how their engagement ring and wedding bands synchronize, both stylistically and symbolically.

Wedding Rings For Men

The options for men's wedding rings are rapidly evolving and expanding. And while classic unadorned men's wedding bands in platinum, white gold and yellow gold are among our top sellers, we're excited to also offer beautiful designs in highly durable metals like cobalt, tantalum, titanium and tungsten, as well as wedding bands with channel-set diamonds, diamond pavé and engravable styles.

What Are Wedding Ring Sets

A wedding ring set includes an engagement ring when matching his-and-her bands for the groom and bride. Jewelers typically distinguish between a wedding set and a bridal set, which does not include the groom's ring. Outside of the jewelry world, most people use the term wedding set for both combinations.

Popular Metals Used In Wedding Rings

Our wedding rings for women and men span timeless plain-metal styles to more elaborate designs with diamonds or other gemstones. You'll find hundreds of options in the most popular metals used for wedding rings, including platinum, yellow gold, white gold and rose gold.

Wedding rings made of platinum are widely admired because platinum is 95% pure and 30 times rarer than gold. Platinum is naturally hypoallergenic and its density and weight make it feel substantial and special. It also wears well over time. That said, platinum wedding bands are one of the more expensive options. Many people who prefer the look of white metal over yellow metal opt for a wedding ring in white gold, which has a platinum-like look with a lower price tag. If you're wondering about the best gold for wedding rings, you'll notice that our yellow gold wedding bands, rose gold wedding bands and white gold wedding bands are all available in 14k or 18k options because pure 24k gold is too soft for crafting wedding rings.

Men's Wedding Rings

Wedding rings are a symbol of lifelong commitment, so it's no surprise that so much time and thought goes into their selection. For years, women have enjoyed hundreds of stylistic options, including different shapes of diamonds and gemstones to pair with an engagement ring. Traditionally, men have had far fewer choices. These days, it is very popular that men look for wedding bands that complement their fashion sense and lifestyle. Classic men's wedding bands in platinum, white gold and yellow gold are among Wonder Jewelers top sellers. We're also excited to offer great-looking designs in highly durable metals like cobalt, tantalum, titanium and tungsten, as well as wedding bands with channel-set diamonds and diamond pavé, plus engravable styles.

Popular Metals For Men's Wedding Bands

Metal preference is a big factor when it comes to choosing a men's wedding band. Because each metal has its own unique properties that affect comfort, durability and care, it can be difficult to decide which is right for you. To help guide your decision, we're diving into the specifics for the common metals used in men’s wedding rings, including gold, platinum, titanium, tungsten and more.

Gold Wedding Bands

Gold wedding rings for men come in a wide variety of styles from minimalist to embellished, including men's yellow gold wedding rings, men's white gold wedding rings, and men's rose gold wedding rings. Between gold's rust-, tarnish-, and corrosion-resistant properties, a malleability that makes it ideal for engraving and resizing, and hypoallergenic nature, it's easy to see why gold wedding rings will continue to be a favorite for years to come. To maintain your gold wedding ring avoid exposure to Chlorine or other chemicals and cleaning products. Gold's malleability makes it susceptible to abrasions and changes in shape. Keep your ring looking good by cleaning it with warm water, detergent-free soap and a soft-bristled brush.

Platinum Wedding Bands

Platinum wedding rings for men are prized for their timeless beauty and inherent value. With the durability to rival diamonds' indestructible nature and 30-times rarer than gold, platinum wedding bands easily secure top-of-the-line status. Unlike its more malleable cousin white gold, platinum is around 95% pure so it can maintain its inherent density without becoming too rigid to be engraved with sweet sentiments or resized for a glove-like fit. Though platinum can wear to display an alluring patina over a lifetime, a quick polish returns its stunning shine to its original brilliance. Even a metal as tough as platinum deserves some TLC. A simple soak in a solution of warm soapy water and a gentle scrub with a soft-bristle brush will do the trick.

Men's Diamond Wedding Bands

Why should women get all the bling? At Wonder Jewelers we offer men's diamond wedding rings in an array of contemporary styles from channel-set with black diamonds in a white-gold band to dimon eternity rings in yellow gold. If you're interested in a men's wedding band that matches your partner's, consider matching metal colors, going with the same diamond shape (round diamonds or non-round fancies), or adding subtle details like milgrain.

Eternity Wedding Bands

Our Eternity wedding bands feature an endless row of perfectly-matched diamonds or colored gemstones showcased in the finest platinum, 18k or 14k yellow gold.

Classic Wedding Bands

Wonder Jewelers customers often request a classic wedding band—and while there are many timeless designs available, a common element is the absence of diamonds and a focus on a very simple, unadorned ring crafted in one of our most popular precious metals.

Yellow Gold Wedding Bands

Yellow gold has a beautiful rich glow that makes it a time-honored classic choice for wedding rings. Plus, it's hypoallergenic and rust, tarnish and corrosion resistant. The two karatages differ slightly in color, durability and hardness. 14k yellow gold is slightly richer in color than 18k gold. It's also harder and a bit more resistant to scratching.

White Gold Wedding Bands

Our customers love white gold for its platinum-like appearance at a lower cost. White gold achieves its signature silver-y brilliance and enhanced durability by mixing pure gold with nickel and silver, and then plating with Rhodium. While this plating is long-wearing, some occasional replating may be required to restore the original color of your white gold wedding band.

Rose Gold Wedding Bands

Rose gold wedding bands are a beautiful and unique choice, and their modern-vintage appeal is a growing trend. The romantic pink hue of roe gold is created by using a copper alloy. The preference of one karatage over another comes down to whether people want a lighter (18k) or slightly deeper (14k) rose color. While rose gold is more durable than yellow gold, it does have the potential to discolor skin or cause an allergic reaction, which is an important consideration.

Platinum Wedding Bands

Referred to as a noble metal due to its superior ability to withstand corrosion and oxidation, platinum is a naturally white metal that develops a lovely patina over time that can be buffed back to a shine if desired. For many, platinum wedding rings perfectly symbolize enduring love.

Vintage-Inspired Wedding Bands

Love the look of a family heirloom? Or maybe, you're inspired by a ring worn by a celebrity in decades past? Whatever type of vintage wedding ring you admire, we have contemporary takes on old world charm, including styles with fancy-shaped diamonds and beautiful milgrain details.

Curved Wedding Bands

This style of wedding band, or guard, features subtle curves that are designed to contour around an engagement ring in a complementary fashion. Our best selling designs are set with sparkling diamond pavé.

Infinity Wedding Bands

Could there be a more perfect symbol for everlasting love? Designed with intertwining strands, infinity wedding bands are a popular style that incorporates the infinity sign to signify an infinite relationship. Many of Wonder Jewelers most popular styles feature diamond pavé.

Stackable Wedding Bands

Creating your own personal wedding ring stack is a great way to go beyond the classic pairing of an engagement ring and wedding band. While one of the most popular combinations is a third band that bookends the engagement ring, you can also add multiple skinny bands for added bling, or consider a ring guard to create a stacked look.

Five-Stone Wedding Band

Five-stone wedding bands are a stunning way to celebrate your marriage with the perfect lineup of your favorite diamonds—and you'll see from some of the styles in our collection, whuch is a great way to showcase fancy shaped diamonds. While there's not a particular symbolism associated with five-stone rings, many of our customers do love them as a way to celebrate their fifth anniversary.

How To Measure Your Ring Size

To help you find your ring size, our diamond jewelry experts have put together this complete ring size guide including a ring size chart, printable ring sizer, and tips for measuring at home. We've helped over 500,000 couples find an engagement rings and wedding rings that are a perfect fit.

How To Measure Ring Size With String, Paper & Ruler

If you're shopping for someone else, the best way to find his or her ring size is to ask. If you're planning a surprise, get help from friends and family. They can ask without raising any eyebrows. The average ring size available for women ranges from size 3 to size 9. The most commonly purchased women's rings range between size 5 and size 7. Size 6 is the most popular. The average ring size available for men ranges from size 6 to size 13. The most commonly purchased men's rings range between size 8 to 10-½. Size 9 is the most popular. These standard ring sizes can help guide you in the right direction. If you do not see the size you need, contact our experts for help placing a special order. There are also a number of at-home methods to find your ring size.

Measure Your Ring Size With These Steps:

  1. Wrap string or paper around the base of your finger.
  2. Mark the point where the ends meet with a pen.
  3. Measure the string or paper with a ruler (mm).
  4. Pick the closest measurement on the ring size chart to find your ring size.

More Ring Sizing Tips:

  1. Measure the inside of another ring that fits using a tape measure and our printable ring sizer.
  2. The ring should fit your finger comfortably: snug enough so it won't fall off, but loose enough to slide over your knuckle with relative ease.
  3. When the knuckle is bigger than the base of the finger, measure both places and pick a size in between the two.
  4. Measure your ring size at the end of the day when your fingers are warm. Finger size changes depending on the time of day and the weather, and your fingers are actually smaller in the early morning and in cold weather. Also, keep in mind that fingers on your dominant hand are usually larger.
  5. Measure 3 to 4 times for more accuracy.

What Happens When My Ring Is Resized?

To make sure you get the best possible fit, the ring resizing process requires adding or removing small amounts of metal depending on the difference between the size purchased and the new size requested. As a result, your ring may be slightly thicker or thinner after resizing. These tiny changes are often visually imperceptible.

The expert jewelry makers at Wonder Jewelers adhere to strict quality standards so your resized ring both sparkles, and fits, beautifully. After the band is resized, each ring gets cleaned and polished before being returned to you.

What If I Order The Wrong Ring Size?

Don't let the question of size stress you out. Wonder Jewelers provides complimentary resizing for most engagement rings and wedding bands within the manufacturer's recommended sizing range, during the first year. If you need a different ring, we offer a 30-day exchange policy for your convenience.

Rings That Can't Be Resized

Some of our ring styles cannot be resized due to their design. In these cases, an icon will appear on the product detail page under the ring size selection.

For example, diamond and gemstone eternity rings with a specific number of gemstones per finger size, milgrain or ornate bands, silver rings, or rings with alternative metals such as Tungsten cannot be resized.

We are happy to exchange your ring for another ring in the correct size within 30 days of purchase. It is important to note that should you opt for an exchange, your new ring may contain fewer or more gemstones, diamonds, or a reduction or increase in precious metal weight, which may cause an increase or decrease in the price.
